AT least 180 people have died in a nightclub in southern Brazil, after a band’s pyrotechnics set it ablaze. Officials are still working to identify the dead and give an exact number, but a reporter at the scene said the club had a capacity of about 2,000 people and was full when the fire started at about 2am.
Other reports said there was only one emergency exit at the Kiss nightclub in the city of Santa Maria, in Rio Grande do Sul state, and panic spread after the fireworks display went awry and people tried to get out.
Fire chief Guido de Melo said: “Fire services are looking for other victims. We can’t give an exact number. People startedpanicking and ended up stepping on each other.”
